House Commission III Urges Attorney General's Office to Form Special Team for Febrie Case

Habiburokhman, Chair of Commission III of the DPR RI, has asked that the Attorney General’s Office investigators handling the case of former Junior Attorney General for Special Crimes (Jampidsus) Febrie Adriansyah be independent. The DPR does not want the case handled by parties directly affiliated with Febrie.

“I cautioned the Acting Junior Attorney General for Special Crimes, Mr Margono, saying this is a challenge; we want to avoid friction, but it is a challenge for those now investigating this case — how independent will they be,” said Habiburokhman at a press conference at the DPR, Senayan, Jakarta, on Monday (13/7).

He said the team investigating the corruption case should not be affiliated with Febrie Adriansyah. He proposed a special team that is untainted in handling the case.

“If possible, the special team investigating this should not be directly affiliated with the former Jampidsus, that is what I said,” said Habiburokhman.

“There is Jamwas there, and others, Jamintel and so on. Teams from there could perhaps form a new team, since we don’t know which members of the former Jampidsus’s circle were involved — a new, clean team,” he added.

Habiburokhman said he trusts the Attorney General’s Office to handle the matter. He noted that the office has previously been able to root out rogue prosecutors.

“And I believe the prosecution has already, several times, cleaned out rogue prosecutors here — there are precedents: prosecutors arresting prosecutors, prosecutors examining prosecutors and so on, no problem,” he concluded.

Commission III of the DPR to Supervise the Handling of the Febrie Case

Earlier, Habiburokhman relayed a message from President Prabowo Subianto regarding the alleged corruption case involving former Junior Attorney General for Special Crimes Febrie Adriansyah. Prabowo wants all law enforcement officials to remain solid and work to the fullest.

“Essentially, President Prabowo certainly wants law enforcers to be solid, all out. Earlier we did just that — we are even committed to being solid. I brought together Kortas and the Jampidsus, God willing, solid,” said Habiburokhman at the Senayan complex, Jakarta, on Saturday (11/7).

Commission III of the DPR RI has decided to form a working committee (panja) to oversee the handling of the case implicating Febrie Adriansyah. Habiburokhman said the panja will summon all parties connected to the case.

“Everyone will be summoned,” he said when asked which parties would be called by the Commission III panja.

Commission III of the DPR has pledged its full attention to the legal process concerning the coal, ASABRI and Krakatau Steel corruption cases. Habiburokhman stressed that the case, which has prominently dragged in law enforcement officials, concerns rogue individuals rather than institutions.

“Several things were announced. First, Commission III is taking the initiative to ensure that the case widely reported recently proceeds within the legal corridor and is thoroughly investigated under the law,” said Habiburokhman at a press conference held at the Attorney General’s Office complex in South Jakarta on Saturday (11/7).

Habiburokhman asserted that his side would escort the investigation so that no actions exceeding legal authority occur between law enforcement institutions while the case proceeds.

“Second, we also want to ensure there are no repercussions, friction or conflict between institutions regarding the handling of this case. Because in any case, this is a case involving rogue individuals — people, individuals — not institutions,” he said.

As is known, the National Police’s Corruption Task Force (Kortas Tipikor) has named Febrie Adriansyah and Don Ritto as suspects in the alleged corruption case. Their case files have now been transferred to the Attorney General’s Office of the Republic of Indonesia.

“At one point, we conducted a case review, and based on that review, we have named two suspects,” said the Head of the National Police’s Corruption Task Force, Inspector General Totok Suharyanto, at a press conference at the Attorney General’s Office on Saturday (11/7).
