House of Representatives Commission III believes the post of Junior Attorney General for Special Crimes (Jampidsus) must be filled by a definitive official immediately. Amid the handling of several major corruption cases, the existence of an acting official is deemed less than ideal for strengthening command, accelerating decision-making, and maintaining public trust in law enforcement. Commission III member Muhammad Nasir Djamil said many parties have urged that the Jampidsus position not be held by an acting official for too long. According to him, the role is strategic, especially in overseeing the anti-corruption agenda that is a focus of President Prabowo Subianto. ‘The Jampidsus position is very strategic in relation to following up on President Prabowo’s directive to thoroughly investigate large-scale corruption cases and maximise the recovery of state financial losses,’ Nasir said when contacted on Tuesday. He explained that the presence of a definitive Jampidsus would make the working mechanism within the special crimes division more effective. In addition to clarifying the chain of command, a definitive official also has full authority to access the subject matter of a case and determine the continuation of a criminal case handling process. According to Nasir, leadership certainty is an important factor so that the investigation and prosecution of corruption cases can proceed without administrative or internal coordination obstacles. ‘A definitive Jampidsus will facilitate the command network, carry out coordination, and also have full authority to gain access regarding the subject matter of a case and decide on the stages of a criminal case,’ he said. He also assessed that definitive status not only affects the institutional aspect but also has a psychological impact on the official holding the position. With a full mandate, a Jampidsus is believed to be more confident in handling major corruption cases, including those involving influential parties. Furthermore, definitive leadership is considered capable of creating a more solid and focused working atmosphere within the Junior Attorney General’s Office for Special Crimes. ‘A definitive Jampidsus, psychologically, will have strong confidence to investigate large-scale corruption cases involving influential people,’ Nasir said. He therefore requested that the Attorney General immediately propose the name of a Jampidsus candidate to the President. This step is considered important so that the appointment process does not drag on and does not give rise to speculation that could affect public trust in law enforcement institutions. ‘To generate public optimism regarding corruption law enforcement, the Attorney General is asked to immediately submit the names of Jampidsus candidates to the Palace so that law enforcement institutions are not tossed about by public opinion,’ Nasir said.
