House of Representatives Commission III member Soedeson Tandra has called on the public to maintain their trust in law enforcement officials handling the case involving former Junior Attorney General for Special Crimes (Jampidsus) Febrie Adriansyah. According to him, Commission III has established a working committee (panja) to oversee the handling of the case, ensuring the legal process will not be left unattended.

The statement was made by Soedeson in response to the views of former Coordinating Minister for Political, Legal and Security Affairs Mahfud MD, who admitted he had been ‘misled’ by the mechanism of transferring case handling from the Indonesian National Police to the Attorney General’s Office. Mahfud also proposed that the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) take over the case.

Responding to Mahfud’s statement, Soedeson requested that interpretations of legal mechanisms not be based on subjective views. ‘Well, if he was misled, then ask Mr Mahfud what he means by being misled. That is how it is, right?’ Soedeson said when confirmed in Jakarta on Tuesday.

He stressed that Commission III adheres to statutory provisions in viewing the handling of the case. ‘We adhere to the law. So, the police consider that the disclosure already has all the evidence, a suspect has been named, and the matter of who handles it is just a technical issue. That is how it is,’ Soedeson stated.

According to the Golkar Party faction member, both the police and the prosecutor’s office are law enforcement agencies with authority in accordance with regulations. Therefore, the public need not harbour suspicions about the ongoing legal process.

‘We must think positively that law enforcement officials are obliged to uphold the law. And do not forget that for law enforcement, especially in this case, Commission III has formed a working committee to oversee it,’ Soedeson said.

He also assured that Commission III will supervise all stages of the case handling. ‘We ask the public to think positively. Trust that this case will not simply be let go. Commission III will fully supervise the examination process, the course of the investigation, the case file compilation, and the transfer of the case,’ Soedeson explained.
