House Commission III: Polri's Position Under the President is Important to Maintain Command Effectiveness
Jakarta, VIVA – Member of the House of Representatives Commission III, Abdullah, supports the recommendations submitted by the Polri Reform Acceleration Commission to President Prabowo Subianto.
One of the contents of the recommendation is the affirmation of Polri’s position to remain under the President. According to him, the recommendation is very appropriate.
“This recommendation is already correct. From the beginning, I have consistently voiced that Polri must remain under the President, not placed under a ministry. That position is important to maintain command effectiveness, institutional independence, and national security system stability,” said Abdullah in his statement on Wednesday, 6 May 2026.
Abdullah also highlighted the importance of stricter regulations regarding the assignment of Polri members outside the police institution, so as not to create polemics in society.
According to him, the placement of Polri personnel in various state institutions must have a clear legal basis to avoid overlapping authorities and violations.
“The assignment of Polri members outside the institution must be regulated clearly, transparently, and accountably. Therefore, I agree that revising the Police Law is an urgent need so that such regulations have legal certainty,” he emphasised.
Abdullah hopes that the recommendations submitted by the Polri Reform Acceleration Commission can serve as strategic considerations for the government and parliament in promoting more comprehensive, professional Polri reforms that meet democratic demands.
Previously reported, President Prabowo Subianto agreed with several matters recommended by the Polri Reform Acceleration Commission. One of them concerns Polri’s position remaining under the president.
This was conveyed by Member of the Polri Reform Commission, Yusril Ihza Mahendra, after reporting the results of their recommendations to Prabowo at the Merdeka Palace, Jakarta, on Tuesday, 5 May 2026.
“We have reported the work results from the Polri Reform Acceleration Committee to the President, and the President received the work results report from the Committee well, and all that was conveyed has been agreed upon by the President regarding the aforementioned alternatives,” said Yusril.
Yusril emphasised that Polri’s position has been jointly agreed with President Prabowo that it will not be under any ministry.
“Regarding Polri’s position, it remains as it is now. Polri is directly under the President and no Security Ministry or Police Ministry will be formed, or placing the police under an existing ministry, but Polri remains directly under the President,” he explained.
