House Commission III: Febrie Case Involves Individuals, Not the Institution
The Chair of Commission III of the Indonesian House of Representatives (DPR RI), Habiburokhman, has affirmed that the legal case entangling the former Deputy Attorney General for Special Crimes (Jampidsus), Febrie Adriansyah, is a matter involving an individual, not the institution. He urged that the legal process not trigger friction between law enforcement agencies.
Habiburokhman made the statement at a joint press conference with the National Police’s Corruption Eradication Task Force (Kortas Tipikor) and the Deputy Attorney General for Special Crimes on Saturday (11 January), after the National Police announced that Febrie had been named a suspect in an alleged corruption and money laundering case.
“Secondly, we also want to ensure there are no adverse effects in the form of friction between the agencies involved in handling this case,” Habiburokhman said.
He stressed that the case must be viewed as one involving an individual, not an institution.
“In any event, this is a case concerning an individual, a person, not an institution,” he said.
In addition, Habiburokhman said Commission III of the DPR had taken the initiative to ensure the case is processed thoroughly within the legal corridor.
“Commission III is taking the initiative to ensure that this case, which has been widely reported recently, can proceed within the legal corridor and be investigated thoroughly under the law,” he said.
To safeguard the process, Commission III of the DPR decided to form a Working Committee (Panja) that will carry out special oversight of the handling of the case.
According to Habiburokhman, immediately after the press conference, Commission III held an internal meeting to establish the Panja.
Going forward, the Panja will monitor in detail the course of law enforcement to ensure it remains in accordance with prevailing laws and regulations.
“In its future work, this Panja will supervise in detail the implementation of law enforcement duties so that they comply with the applicable legislation. The law must be upheld, and the human rights of the suspects must of course also be respected,” he said.
Previously, the Head of the National Police’s Kortas Tipikor, Inspector General Totok Suharyanto, announced that the police had named two suspects in the case: DR and former Jampidsus Febrie Adriansyah (FA).
According to Totok, Febrie was named a suspect in an alleged corruption and money laundering case related to the handling of the PT Asabri case as well as other alleged corruption offences.
On the same day, Attorney General ST Burhanuddin appointed Rudi Margono as Acting Deputy Attorney General for Special Crimes, replacing Febrie Adriansyah, who resigned from his post.
The Head of the Attorney General’s Office Legal Information Centre, Anang Supriatna, said the appointment was made to ensure continuity of duties, functions and authority within the Jampidsus until a permanent official is appointed. He also assured that the leadership change would not affect the ongoing handling of special criminal cases.
