House Commission III Chair Explains Photo Op with Police Chief and Attorney General
The Chairman of Commission III of the Indonesian House of Representatives (DPR RI), Habiburokhman, has revealed the reason behind a photo opportunity with National Police Chief General Listyo Sigit Prabowo and Attorney General ST Burhanuddin at the Parliament Complex in Senayan, Jakarta, on Tuesday. Habiburokhman stressed that the gesture was deliberately made as a symbol of harmony between the two law enforcement institutions.
Habiburokhman did not deny public concerns about potential friction between the agencies following the legal case involving former Deputy Attorney General for Special Crimes, Febrie Adriansyah. Therefore, he said Commission III embraced the two leaders to show that their relationship remains solid.
"We care about these two institutions, we do not want any friction. So, we invited them, I took a photo, and they laughed happily, thank God. Hopefully, things will be smoother going forward," Habiburokhman said at the Parliament Complex in Senayan, Jakarta, on Tuesday.
The Gerindra Party politician expressed appreciation for the performance of the National Police and the Attorney General’s Office to date. According to him, the rising tension in the public sphere does not diminish the fact that both institutions are the parliament’s best partners.
"We deliberately invited the National Police Chief and the Attorney General at this very appropriate moment because both are our best partners. The Police Chief is a good person, the Attorney General is a good person, the National Police institution has also worked very well, and the Prosecutor’s Office has worked very well," he said.
To prevent the potential for wider structural friction, Habiburokhman expressed full support for the move to transfer the handling of the case involving former Jampidsus Febrie Adriansyah entirely to the Attorney General’s Office for investigation.
"We are very concerned about preventing friction between institutions regarding Mr Febrie’s case. Therefore, we also agreed yesterday that the case be handed over to the Prosecutor’s Office for investigation. Why? Because we also believe the Prosecutor’s Office has independent prosecutors. Even though they are examining a fellow prosecutor, their reference will definitely be the law and justice," Habiburokhman concluded.
