Members of the House of Representatives Commission III, Nasir Djamil, agree that the placement of Polri should continue to be directly under the President. Nasir stated that this is in line with the mandate of the reformasi era struggle. “The position of Polri directly under the President is the trust of the reform,” said Nasir to Republika in Jakarta on Thursday (7/5/2026). This was stated by Nasir in response to recommendations submitted by the Police Reform Acceleration Commission (KPRP) to the Head of State. One of the recommendations is the affirmation that the position of Polri remains under the President of the Republic of Indonesia. The member of the PKS Faction in the House of Representatives emphasised that placing Polri directly under the President of the Republic of Indonesia is in line with the spirit of independence. He hopes that the President can position Polri as an independent state instrument. “The hope is that the President will act as a statesman in treating the Polri institution. Thus, the Bhayangkara corps remains independent in carrying out its main duties and functions,” said Nasir. He also disagrees with placing Polri under a ministry. According to Nasir, that option could lead to stronger politicisation of Polri. “The desire of some people to place the Polri institution under a ministry is not only ahistorical but has the potential for blatant politicisation of Polri,” said Nasir. He also doubts the effectiveness of placing Polri under a ministry. Nasir suspects that option would not improve Polri’s performance. “The vast territory and Indonesian societal culture do not yet allow Polri to be under a ministry. Its position under the President is the right and solution-oriented step,” explained Nasir. Previously, the KPRP submitted recommendations to President Prabowo at the Merdeka Palace in Central Jakarta on Tuesday (5/5/2026). There are six recommendations, namely the affirmation that the position of Polri remains under the President, strengthening the National Police Commission, the mechanism for appointing the National Police Chief, regulations on assigning Polri members outside the police institution, strengthening institutional and managerial aspects, and revisions to the Police Law. The KPRP revealed that they did not propose placing Polri under a ministry. KPRP member Mahfud MD said that if Polri were under a ministry, it would be vulnerable to politicisation. Therefore, the KPRP recommends that Polri remain directly under the president. The KPRP recommends that restrictions on positions that can be held by Polri members outside the police institution must be regulated in a limited manner. The basis for regulating these position restrictions will be regulated through regulations because it concerns the needs of civil servants (ASN).
