House Commission II to Continue Public Hearing on Election Bill, Inviting Experts from UI to UGM
JAKARTA - House of Representatives Commission II will continue its series of Public Hearing Meetings (RDPU) related to discussions on the revision of the Election Law (RUU Pemilu) by inviting a number of experts from various universities.
Deputy Chairman of Commission II of the House of Representatives, Aria Bima, stated that the academics to be invited come from Universitas Indonesia (UI), Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM), Universitas Airlangga (Unair), and Universitas Padjadjaran (Unpad).
“We are still delving deeper today. Next, we will invite from UI, UGM, then Unair and Unpad regarding the Constitutional Court decision, parliamentary threshold, presidential threshold, and central and regional elections,” said Aria Bima when met at the House of Representatives Building, Tuesday (13/5/2026).
The commission is even inviting democratic research institutions from Nahdlatul Ulama (NU) and Muhammadiyah.
So far, continued Aria, Commission II has held three RDPUs with experts to supplement the preparation of the RUU Pemilu draft together with the House’s Expert Body.
“Previously, we invited democratic research institutions from NU and Muhammadiyah. Previously, we invited Ramlan Surbakti and one more, I forget who,” explained Aria.
Aria stated that all results from the RDPUs and Commission II meetings have been submitted to the House’s Expert Body to be formulated into a draft RUU.
“And we have also received various inputs in the form of a draft RUU from the Expert Body, both regarding the parliamentary threshold, presidential threshold, and central and regional elections conveyed by previous experts,” he revealed.
He assessed that translating the Constitutional Court’s (MK) decisions into new regulations is not an easy matter because there are many differing views from the experts.
“So regarding the working group matter, we are still awaiting approval from the leadership because translating the current MK decision being prepared by the Expert Body is also not easy,” said Aria.
“Because all experts, whether on central and regional elections there are those for by-elections, extensions, or acting officials. Even among experts, for example, Mr Jimly with Prof Mahfud, and Mr Refly Harun with expert Ms Khusnul Mari’yah, or from CSIS, they differ,” he explained.
Nevertheless, Aria assured that the House remains committed to drafting the best Election Law and will still be guided by the final and binding Constitutional Court decisions.
“Because so far, all final and binding Constitutional Court decisions have always been implemented by the House. Well, this time with the various simulations we have conducted, we believe we will get the best law,” he concluded.
