House Commission II Hopes Election Bill Will Be Discussed This Year
Jakarta (ANTARA) - Deputy Chairman of Commission II of the House of Representatives Zulfikar Arse Sadikin has targeted that the Draft Bill (RUU) on Amendments to Law Number 7 of 2017 on General Elections (Pemilu) can be discussed in 2026. Reflecting on previous experience, he said that the Election Law was almost revised in 2019. However, he noted, one of the law-making bodies at that time was not inclined to discuss the law. “That’s why I mentioned the experience factor earlier; I said there are factors beyond our control that we need to consider, such as the state of the country and the government’s own situation,” Zulfikar said at the parliamentary complex in Jakarta on Friday. In addition, according to him, the discussion of the bill also needs to take into account the conditions of the political parties in the House of Representatives. He stated that Commission II of the House of Representatives already has the intention to have the bill enacted as soon as possible and to proceed to the discussion stage. “Considering that by the end of this year we will enter the stage of the 2029 elections, namely the recruitment of election organisers,” he said. He also revealed that the meeting on the Election Bill in Commission II of the House of Representatives on Tuesday (14/4) was not cancelled, but was changed to a Meeting of the House of Representatives Leadership with the Heads of Faction Groups. Because, he said, the Election Bill is not yet ready to be discussed internally in Commission II of the House of Representatives due to incomplete regulations. “Normally, for an internal meeting, there should already be the documents, the academic paper and the draft bill text, but these are not yet available. Because they are not, it wasn’t the right time,” he said.
