Deputy Chairman of House Commission I Dave Laksono has highlighted the United States’ efforts to blockade the Strait of Hormuz. Dave assessed that this action has the potential to trigger a larger escalation.

“The Strait of Hormuz is a vital route for global energy trade, and as affirmed by the UN, no single country has the legitimacy to close access to this international waterway,” Dave told reporters on Wednesday (15/4/2026).

Dave stated that the impact of the blockade would be broader than previous conflicts. Because, he said, the blockade directly affects the stability of global energy supplies.

“The current surge in oil prices is clear evidence that any disruption in the Strait of Hormuz will immediately be felt by all countries, including Indonesia,” he remarked.

According to him, Indonesia needs to strengthen multilateral diplomacy. In particular, he said, through the UN and other international forums, to ensure that the principle of freedom of navigation is maintained.

“The government needs to prepare anticipatory measures in the energy sector, both through diversification of supply sources and acceleration of domestic energy transitions, so that dependence on geopolitical dynamics can be minimised,” he disclosed.

“House Commission I of the Republic of Indonesia is optimistic that with active diplomacy, solid international cooperation, and adaptive national energy policies, Indonesia can maintain economic stability and ensure that the interests of the people remain protected,” he added.

The United States military has begun enforcing a blockade against ships from all countries heading to or leaving ports and coastal areas of Iran in the Persian Gulf and Gulf of Oman.

US President Donald Trump stated that the measure aims to force Iran to reopen the Strait of Hormuz, a strategic route that under normal conditions carries about one-fifth of the world’s oil and gas trade.

“We cannot allow a single country to hold the world to ransom,” Trump said when announcing the blockade at the White House.

Trump also warned that Iranian warships approaching the blockade area would be destroyed. He stated that any Iranian ship approaching would be “immediately eliminated.”

According to US military officials, the blockade will be enforced against ships from all countries attempting to enter or leave Iranian ports. This step was taken after peace talks between Washington and Tehran failed to reach an agreement over the weekend.
