House Commission I Hopes Prabowo Will Affirm Support for Palestine at Inaugural BoP Meeting
President Prabowo Subianto has flown to the United States, with one purpose being to attend the inaugural meeting of the Board of Peace established by US President Donald Trump. Deputy Chairman of House Commission I, Sukamta, has expressed his hope that Prabowo will affirm support for Palestine at the meeting.
"To reaffirm Indonesia's support for full Palestinian independence through a two-state solution that is fair, dignified, and in accordance with international law. This forum must serve as a space to strengthen that commitment," Sukamta told reporters on Tuesday (17/2/2026).
Sukamta believes Indonesia also needs to push for the immediate cessation of violence against civilians in Palestine. He stated that security is the primary prerequisite for a sustainable peace process.
"To push for the immediate cessation of all forms of violence and ensure maximum protection for Palestinian civilians. Stability and security are the primary prerequisites for a sustainable peace process," he said.
Sukamta further stressed the importance of ensuring that every reconstruction and recovery agenda proceeds in tandem with Palestinian people's rights. He stated that peace must also prioritise justice.
"To ensure that every post-conflict reconstruction and recovery agenda proceeds in step with respect for the rights of the Palestinian people and the principle of sovereignty. Lasting peace must be built upon justice, not merely a temporary cessation of conflict," he said.
Furthermore, Sukamta hoped the government would use this moment to reinforce Indonesia's position as a nation consistently championing peace and humanity.
"The hope is that the government can seize this momentum to reinforce Indonesia's position as a nation that consistently champions peace, justice, and humanity," he said.
Echoing Sukamta's sentiments, Deputy Chairman of Commission I Dave Laksono said the Board of Peace meeting represents a strategic moment to ensure Indonesia's voice is fairly represented. Dave stated that Indonesia's participation is not merely symbolic but also a tangible contribution to building peace.
"The inaugural BoP session is a strategic moment to ensure that the voices of developing nations, including Indonesia, can be fairly represented in efforts to maintain global stability and peace. Commission I of the House of Representatives views Indonesia's participation not merely as symbolic, but also as a tangible contribution to building inclusive and sustainable peace governance," Dave said.
Commission I, according to Dave, will oversee Indonesia's participation in the Board of Peace to ensure it genuinely delivers benefits. He also expressed hope that Indonesia's involvement would strengthen its position as a pioneer of world peace.
"We will carry out our oversight function in accordance with our duties and authority, so that Indonesia's participation in the BoP genuinely delivers strategic benefits for national interests whilst strengthening Indonesia's position as a pioneer of world peace," he said.
"Within that framework, Indonesia will continue to advocate for the importance of justice, equality, and respect for international law, including the rights of the Palestinian people," he added.
