House Commission I Approves Defence Ratification Bills with Turkey and Malaysia

Commission I of the House of Representatives (DPR) held a working meeting with the government to discuss the Bill on the Ratification of the Defence Cooperation Agreement between the Government of the Republic of Indonesia and the Government of the Republic of Turkey, as well as the Bill on the Ratification of the Defence Cooperation Agreement between the Government of the Republic of Indonesia and the Government of Malaysia. Commission I and the government agreed to bring both bills to the plenary session.

The working meeting was held behind closed doors at Commission I of the DPR, Senayan, Jakarta, on Wednesday (1/7/2026). Deputy Chairman of Commission I Dave Laksono confirmed that both ratification bills were approved by the DPR and the government to proceed to the next stage.

"Both bills have been approved to proceed to the next stage of deliberation," Dave said when confirmed.

Dave emphasised that the scope of defence cooperation with the two countries is broad and strategic in nature.

"In general, defence cooperation with these two countries also includes joint military exercises, exchanges of human resources and technology, as well as transactions for the purchase and sale of defence equipment. All these activities require a clear legal umbrella, and that is the essence of this ratification," he added.

He urged the government to truly ensure that the ratifications with both countries benefit Indonesia. He also requested that the cooperation not disrupt Indonesia’s political stance in the world.

"It must not disrupt the direction of the free and active foreign policy we adhere to, and it must encourage the strengthening of the domestic defence industry’s independence," he stated.

Dave explained that after the first-level deliberation on these two bills was approved by Commission I of the DPR RI together with the government, the results of the deliberation would be brought to the Second-Level Deliberation at the nearest DPR RI Plenary Session.

"To subsequently be enacted into law. Once enacted, these two defence cooperation agreements will have fully binding legal force and become the basis for the sustainable implementation of defence cooperation between the Republic of Indonesia and Turkey and Malaysia," he concluded.
