House and people's aspirations
House and people's aspirations
From Kompas
Recently the government has been blamed for all the turmoil in this country: bomb blasts, strikes, community protests, street rallies, uprisings in Aceh and Irian Jaya, and many other similar incidents.
The Speaker of the House of Representatives has said, however, that these incidents reflect the failure of legislators in the House because the aspirations of the people have not been entirely and properly channeled to the government and the People's Consultative Assembly through their representatives in the House.
To be fair, both the government and the House must be appraised. Members of the House should not concern themselves with salaries and facilities because, if they do, this will be their red mark, in the sense that they are only concerned with enriching themselves and hardly pay heed to the people they are supposed to represent. If House members are of this quality, the only thing fit for them will be dismissal.
