Hotspots in Kalimantan Reach 1,487 Points, Central Kalimantan the Highest

The National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB) has stated that the distribution of hotspots in the Kalimantan region remains a government concern amid the dry season. The highest number of hotspots is in Central Kalimantan.

Acting Head of the BNPB Data, Information and Disaster Communication Centre, Berton SP Panjaitan, said that based on the latest monitoring data from the NOAA-20 satellite up to Thursday (20/8), the distribution of hotspots in the Kalimantan region totalled 1,487.

“The number is spread with the highest concentration in Central Kalimantan at 767 points, followed by West Kalimantan at 560 points. Meanwhile, South Kalimantan and East Kalimantan each recorded 74 points, while North Kalimantan had 3 points,” said Berton in his statement on Thursday (20/8/2026).

The government continues to strengthen cross-sector coordination and preparedness to anticipate the potential spread of forest and land fires. The BNPB, together with regional governments, is monitoring the development of hotspots, mapping vulnerable areas, and coordinating to determine handling measures based on conditions on the ground.

The BNPB has urged regional governments and the public to remain vigilant against potential hydrometeorological disasters during the dry season, particularly forest and land fires. Regional governments are expected to continue strengthening preparedness, monitoring, and early detection of potential forest and land fires and to ensure the availability of firefighting infrastructure.

The public is also urged not to carry out burning activities in fire-prone areas. If members of the public know of or see a fire incident, they should immediately report it to the local authorities so that handling can be carried out quickly and effectively.
