Hotman Paris Praises South Jakarta Prosecutor's Office for Not Detaining Roy Suryo and Dr Tifa: 'Perhaps My Advice Was Heeded'

Celebrity lawyer Hotman Paris Hutapea has responded to the South Jakarta District Prosecutor’s Office decision not to detain Roy Suryo and Tifauzia Tyassuma, known as Dr Tifa, in the case regarding allegations of fake diplomas belonging to Indonesia’s 7th President, Joko Widodo (Jokowi). Through a post on his personal Instagram account, Hotman Paris expressed appreciation for the South Jakarta Prosecutor’s Office and praised Attorney General ST Burhanuddin for the decision. “The South Jakarta Prosecutor’s Office has decided not to detain Roy Suryo and his associates. Bravo Attorney General. The Attorney General is great,” said Hotman Paris on Tuesday, 23 June 2026. Hotman Paris alluded to advice he had given a few days prior regarding the handling of the case. He joked that the decision not to detain Roy Suryo and Dr Tifa might align with the views he had previously expressed. “Perhaps it was because of my suggestion two days ago, based on wisdom and discretion in my previous post, advising that Roy Suryo and his associates should not be detained,” he said. According to Hotman Paris, the legal process can continue without detention. He had also proposed that the suspects could be placed under house arrest or city arrest. “My suggestion at the time was that the important thing is for the legal process to continue. If they are to be detained, it could be house arrest or city arrest,” said Hotman Paris. “The important thing is that the legal process continues. At that time, I advised against imprisoning them first,” he added. He stressed that his statement did not side with any party involved in the case, but was purely a personal view as an observer. “That was my pure suggestion. I am not siding with Jokowi, nor am I siding with Roy Suryo, but I am an observer, although not a politician,” he said. Hotman Paris then expressed his gratitude to the Attorney General, the Head of the DKI Jakarta High Prosecutor’s Office, and the Head of the South Jakarta District Prosecutor’s Office. “I understand the current state of society. I understand the situation of President Prabowo, who for 25 years sought legal advice from me. So my pure suggestion does not side with anyone. It is purely wise discretion,” said Hotman Paris. “The important thing is that the legal process allows both sides to prove their case, that is what makes a champion. Once again, thank you to the Attorney General, the Head of the DKI Jakarta High Prosecutor’s Office, and also the Head of the South Jakarta District Prosecutor’s Office who wisely and discreetly did not detain Roy Suryo,” he added.
