Hotels in Yogyakarta See Low Occupancy During 2026 Eid Holiday: What Are the Causes?
Several hotels in the Special Region of Yogyakarta (DIY) were reported to have low guest occupancy during the recent 2026 Eid holiday. According to data from the Indonesian Hotel and Restaurant Association (PHRI) DIY, the average hotel room occupancy rate in the province was around 68% during the Eid period, specifically from Friday (20/3/2026) to Thursday (26/3/2026). PHRI DIY Chairman Deddy Pranowo Eryono detailed that from Monday (16/3/2026) to Sunday (22/3/2026), the average occupancy in DIY hotels ranged from 40-65%. In comparison, last year’s occupancy was 60-75% for the same period, as reported by Kompas.com. Deddy added that the highest occupancy dates in DIY hotels during this year’s Eid holiday were Friday (20/3/2026), Saturday (21/3/2026), and Sunday (22/3/2026), reaching 75%. Previously, PHRI General Secretary Maulana Yusran had stated the same. When contacted by Kompas.com on Wednesday (1/4/2026), Yusran noted that hotels in several regions were not as busy as usual during the 2026 Eid holiday. “Why did Yogyakarta’s occupancy drop like that? Yogyakarta is usually always crowded as a destination,” said Yusran. He mentioned at least three causes: reduced consumer purchasing power and the abundance of homestays, villas, and guesthouses. The diverse and relatively cheap accommodation options led many tourists to choose lodging types other than hotels. “Easy inter-city accessibility also (affects it), reducing the length of stay,” stated Wikan. On the other hand, Head of the Yogyakarta City Cultural Heritage Area Management Unit Fitria Dyah Anggraini reported that the number of tourist visits to Malioboro during the 2026 Eid holiday period from Wednesday (18/3/2026) to Sunday (22/3/2026) totalled 137,722 visits. She broke it down: 13,951 visits on Wednesday (18/3/2026), 9,364 on Thursday (19/3/2026), 33,529 on Friday (20/3/2026), 23,903 on Saturday (21/3/2026), and 56,975 on Sunday (22/3/2026). “This (visit data) is only counted at five entry points to Malioboro, namely East Zero Point, West Zero Point, Suryatmajan, North BPD, and in front of D’Jogja hotel. Counting starts at 08:00 WIB until 24:00 WIB,” she said.
