Hotels in Karangasem Sluggish Ahead of Nyepi and Eid al-Fitr
The long holiday period during Nyepi Day and Eid al-Fitr in 2026 has yet to significantly impact hotel occupancy in Karangasem, which remains sluggish to this day. Chairman of the Indonesian Hotel and Restaurant Association (PHRI) Karangasem, I Wayan Kariasa, revealed that hotel occupancy rates are only around 20 to 40 percent, not much different from ordinary days.
“Actually, we hoped that during this year’s Nyepi and Eid al-Fitr holiday moments, hotel occupancy could reach 60 percent. But in reality, it’s still quiet,” said Kariasa on Wednesday (18/3/2026).
Kariasa suspects that Nyepi and Eid, which are almost coinciding, are contributing to the low hotel occupancy. He hopes that conditions will improve after Nyepi.
“I hope that after Nyepi, there will be an increase in the number of tourists staying, so that the 60 percent occupancy target can be achieved,” hoped Kariasa.
Reflecting on previous years, after Nyepi Day, there are usually some domestic tourists who stay while holidaying at several tourist destinations in Karangasem. “Hopefully this year will be the same,” he said.
According to Kariasa, the current situation is also exacerbated by unrest in the Middle East region, which affects visits from foreign tourists. It is recorded that several tourists from Europe and surrounding areas have chosen to cancel their visits.
