Hotel workers go on strike

DENPASAR, Bali: Hundreds of employees of the Kartika Plaza Hotel in Kuta, 15 kilometers south of Denpasar, have gone on strike in protest at unfair treatment meted out by managers in the hotel.

The strikers called for a number of their managers to be dismissed for "treating staff inhumanely", Antara reported on Tuesday.

The strike, which began at 8 a.m., brought the five star hotel to a standstill, the agency said.

An employee who requested anonymity said the hotel's workforce was angered by the arbitrary dismissal of many workers and complained that they were not given their statutory health allowances.

Later in the day, the hotel's management went into a closed meeting with the union and officials from the local office of the Ministry of Manpower.
