Hotel staff needs not anticipated

DENPASAR, Bali: Most hotels and other tourist companies in Bali rarely report their staff needs to the authorities, head of the Bali Manpower Office I Gusti Ngurah Mayoen said yesterday.

The information was needed by the authority in order to organize its programs at various vocational training centers, Mayoen told Antara.

Better coordination would help the manpower office plan its programs, he said.

Hotels should know how many workers they need and the kind of skill required for the next two to three years, he said.

Some job vacancies can not be filled in Bali because they do not match the skills possessed by job seekers, he said.

There are some 25,000 job seekers registered with the manpower office. Some 19,000 of them are high school graduates and most of them do not have the basic skills necessary to compete for the jobs available, Antara said.

The head of Bali chapter of the Association of Hotels and Restaurants admitted that most hoteliers had not reported their manpower plans. "Most hoteliers are more concerned with their occupancy rates than staffing needs," I Gde Wirata said. (emb)
