Hotel Association Reveals School Holidays Boosted Q2-2026 Occupancy Rates
The Indonesian Hotel and Restaurant Association (PHRI) has revealed that hotel occupancy rates in the second quarter of 2026 showed improvement compared to the same period last year. The increase was primarily driven by the school holiday season, which boosted domestic tourism activity.
PHRI Secretary General Maulana Yusran stated that during the school holidays, several tourist destinations recorded a surge in hotel occupancy rates of 20-30% above regular levels. “When we talk about the second quarter of 2026, we are looking at up to June, which still includes the school holidays. During this period, there was a spike in holidaymakers in several regions. So, in some areas that are always tourism targets, occupancy could increase by at least 20% or 30% from regular levels,” Maulana told CNBC Indonesia on Monday (3/8/2026).
He explained that the impact of the school holidays made the hotel occupancy performance in the second quarter of 2026 better than the previous year. Although official data for the second quarter has not yet been released, PHRI estimates that occupancy rates have risen. Maulana detailed that throughout April and May 2026, hotel occupancy had already grown by approximately 2% compared to the same period last year. Meanwhile, June is expected to record higher growth due to the additional boost from the school holiday season.
“In April and May, there was growth in 2026 compared to 2025, at least around 2%. For June, it will certainly grow as well. So, it should be much higher compared to 2025,” he said. However, Maulana noted that the increase in occupancy is inseparable from seasonal factors, namely the long holiday period that encourages people to travel. “There was an improvement during the holiday season. The first quarter of 2026 was helped by the Eid holiday, and the second quarter, especially June, was significantly boosted by the school holidays,” he stated. PHRI therefore estimates that hotel occupancy performance in the second quarter of 2026 will be better than the same period last year, thanks to the contribution of the school holidays as the main driver of increased room demand.
