Hospital Accreditation to be Based on Patient Safety

The Ministry of Health is set to revamp the hospital accreditation system in Indonesia. Minister of Health Budi Gunadi Sadikin stated that, moving forward, the quality assessment of healthcare facilities will be based on clinical outcomes. This system will allow hospital accreditation to be measured in real-time based on recovery rates and patient safety (survival rate). “If there is a hospital with a high surgical failure rate, we can immediately downgrade its accreditation status mid-term,” said Budi, as quoted from the Ministry of Health website on Friday, 31 July 2026.

Through this mechanism, Budi noted, a hospital’s accreditation status will no longer be limited to quinquennial administrative evaluations. Hospitals may be evaluated at any time if there is a decline in the quality of service. “This is a form of protection for public safety,” he added.

The Director General of Advanced Health Services at the Ministry of Health, Azhar Jaya, explained that the medical success in question will not be based on absolute success. He noted that medical procedures cannot realistically achieve a 100 per cent success rate. “Therefore, the assessment will be based on standards and the national average success rate of services, rather than absolute service success,” Azhar stated in a written statement on Friday.

He ensured that the success of medical procedures used as accreditation indicators will utilise national average standards developed jointly by the Ministry of Health, colleges, professional organisations, and hospital associations, while also referring to international best practices. Furthermore, Azhar confirmed that medical outcomes will not be the sole benchmark. Hospital capacity will continue to be assessed based on the readiness of human resources, infrastructure, and available medical equipment. Azhar added that this accreditation system will be implemented gradually, with full implementation occurring once the system is ready, particularly regarding the integration of hospital data.
