Horses vaccinated to prevent anthrax

YOGYAKARTA: As part of efforts to prevent an outbreak of anthrax, Bantul animal husbandry office here has vaccinated hundreds of horses in the regency's coastal areas.

The horses are used for tourism purposes.

The vaccination targeted the horses as the animals were in close proximity with people, said Sri Budoyo, the chief of Bantul animal husbandry office. The animals are used by tour operators to serve visitors wishing to tour around Bantul coastal areas, including Parangtritis Beach.

Anthrax has stirred concern after several cows and water buffaloes were discovered to have died of the disease in Makassar, South Sulawesi, a few days ago. -- JP
