Horse Powertrain Unveils New Hybrid Powertrain System
Jakarta — Powertrain systems company Horse Powertrain introduced a new hybrid powertrain system in February 2026, designed to operate using 100 per cent petrol derived from renewable feedstocks.
According to a CarNewsChina report on Thursday (19/2), the new powertrain from the joint venture owned by Geely, Renault Group, and Aramco is based on the Horse H12 hybrid engine concept, developed in collaboration with Spanish energy company Repsol.
According to the companies, the engine achieves a peak brake thermal efficiency of 44.2 per cent.
Under Worldwide Harmonised Light Vehicle Test Procedure (WLTP) test conditions, fuel consumption was reported at less than 3.3 litres per 100 km, approximately 40 per cent lower than the 2023 European average for new passenger cars.
The H12 concept employs a high 17:1 compression ratio, a redesigned exhaust gas recirculation system, optimised turbocharging, and hybrid-specific transmission calibration. These modifications are aimed at improving combustion efficiency and energy recovery within a hybrid powertrain configuration.
Horse Powertrain’s new system is designed to operate using petrol from Repsol produced from renewable feedstocks. According to the company, a mid-sized vehicle using this hybrid system could reduce CO₂ emissions by approximately 1.77 tonnes per year compared with a conventional petrol vehicle, assuming an annual mileage of 12,500 km.
The companies stated that the first demonstrator vehicle using the new hybrid system is expected to be showcased in early 2026.
Horse Powertrain was established in 2024 as an independent supplier combining the internal combustion engine and hybrid powertrain operations of Geely and Renault. The company, which operates 17 factories and five research and development centres globally, supplies engines and hybrid systems to brands including Renault, Geely Auto, Volvo Cars, Nissan, Mitsubishi Motors, and Proton.
