Hooligans in Medan
Hooligans in Medan
From Kompas
The Kompas report about hooligans' activities (Nov. 17 and 18,
1995) gives the impression that hooliganism exists only in
Jakarta and its surroundings. In Medan today, medium-scale
businessmen also feel uncomfortable. Hooligans frequently go to
offices and ask for contributions to various functions, like
conferences, installation ceremonies, national day celebration or
even for dedicating a guard post.
The fund collectors usually have cruel faces and wear
paratrooper's jackets and their mouths smell of alcohol. Take
care to give some cash or you may face greater risks. One evening
they stoned my office because I refused to pay the contributions
previously.
Another act of hooliganism is that they stop every vehicle in
Jl. Binjai and force the drivers to buy a sticker (belonging to a
youth organization) for Rp 1,500. Strangely enough, the security
forces do nothing.
