Honouring Victims, Megawati Lays Flowers After Inaugurating Kudatuli Monument

PDI Perjuangan (PDI-P) Chairwoman Megawati Soekarnoputri laid flowers at the newly inaugurated Kudatuli Monument in front of the party’s headquarters in Menteng, Central Jakarta, as a mark of respect for the victims of the 27 July 1996 incident. The solemn procession took place after the monument’s inauguration on Tuesday, 27 July 2026, where Megawati also placed a wreath as a form of prayer. She was accompanied by her son and DPP PDIP Chair Prananda Prabowo, his wife Nancy Prananda, and their children Muhammad Prabhaswara Pranakarno and Diah Safira Octaliakasih. Also in attendance were Meutia Hatta and Halida Hatta, daughters of First Vice President Mohammad Hatta, along with sculptor Dolorosa Sinaga and PDIP Secretary-General Hasto Kristiyanto. Following the flower ceremony, Megawati and the guests posed for photographs with the ‘Merdeka’ (Freedom) salute, reaffirming their commitment to upholding democratic values. In her remarks, Megawati urged the public to keep the spirit of struggle alive, stating, ‘The flame of the struggle, I always believe, will never be extinguished as long as the love for the homeland continues to resonate in our hearts.’ She also reminded the younger generation never to forget the heroes who fought for the nation, emphasising that the Republic of Indonesia was built with ‘tears, blood, and sweat.’
