Honorary Madrasah Teachers Projected to Receive Rp1 Million per Month in 2027
Deputy Chairman of House Commission VIII Abdul Wachid announced that the commission has approved a proposed additional budget of Rp4.6 trillion for the Ministry of Religious Affairs (Kemenag) within the indicative ceiling for the 2027 fiscal year. The funds will be used to provide supplementary wages for honorary teachers at madrasahs.
"We need to convey that Commission VIII of the Indonesian House of Representatives has just approved the proposed additional budget for the Ministry of Religious Affairs in the 2027 indicative ceiling. The additional budget will be allocated for honorariums for honorary madrasah teachers amounting to Rp1 million per month," Abdul stated during a working visit to the Kemenag Regional Office in Central Java, Semarang, on Wednesday (24/6/2026).
He added that the proposed wage increase for honorary madrasah teachers was initially set at Rp1.5 million per month. "But yesterday afternoon I spoke with the Deputy Speaker of the House, and Rp1.5 million is not sufficient. Because the budget is around Rp4.6 trillion," he asserted.
Abdul expressed hope that the additional wages would eventually improve the welfare of honorary madrasah teachers. Meanwhile, Central Java Deputy Governor Taj Yasin welcomed the potential realisation of the additional honorarium for honorary madrasah teachers.
"Our colleagues from Commission VIII will push for these religious teachers to also receive incentives like those in Central Java. The nominal amount mentioned earlier was estimated between Rp200,000 and Rp1 million. This is what we are waiting for," Yasin said after attending the working visit of House Commission VIII at the Kemenag Regional Office in Central Java.
According to Yasin, the Central Java provincial government, including district and city administrations, has already endeavoured to provide incentives to honorary madrasah teachers in the region. "Although we have distributed them, with some receiving from the provincial government and some from districts or cities, it is not yet comprehensive," he stressed.
He assessed that additional incentives for honorary madrasah teachers would boost their welfare. "It will certainly improve welfare. However, this is still being discussed in the House, so we shall wait and see," he explained.
Yasin noted that what needs to be done now is data synchronisation between the Kemenag Regional Office in Central Java and other stakeholders regarding the number of madrasah teachers eligible for the additional incentive. This is to ensure that the allocated budget can be distributed right on target.
Meanwhile, Head of the Kemenag Regional Office in Central Java Saiful Mujab revealed that the total number of madrasah teachers in Central Java, from raudatul atfal to madrasah aliah levels, both public and private, is 107,904. Of these, 81 per cent are honorary or non-civil servant teachers.
