Hong Kong University Increases Quota for International Student Admissions
The University of Hong Kong is increasing its quota for international student admissions. This policy change further opens opportunities for Indonesian students to pursue education at the top-ranked Asian university according to Quacquarelli Symonds (QS). Ryan Wong, a representative from the University of Hong Kong, stated that previously, the number of international students at the campus was limited. Students from outside Hong Kong were only allocated a 30% quota of the total student body there. “Originally, there was a rule that 70% of students had to be local Hong Kong residents,” said Wong in Jakarta on Sunday, 26 April 2026. That rule was a policy of the Hong Kong government. As a public university, the University of Hong Kong is required to follow those provisions. However, Wong said that Hong Kong is now accepting more international students. “This is because Hong Kong’s population is ageing, and Hong Kong also wants to invite new talents to contribute to our society,” said Wong, who also teaches in the civil engineering department at HKU. Currently, said Wong, the quota for international students at the University of Hong Kong has changed to around 60% of the total students. “So we are doubling the number of international students,” he stated. The University of Hong Kong sees Indonesia as one of the potential countries in line with this policy change. Currently, there are only about a hundred Indonesian students at the campus. Indonesian students, said Wong, have good opportunities if they apply to study at the University of Hong Kong. “We see Indonesian students as very talented, hardworking, and, based on past experiences, they perform highly at HKU. Therefore, we are expanding recruitment in Indonesia,” he said. The University of Hong Kong is a campus established in 1911. This university, officially named The University of Hong Kong, ranks 11th in the world in the QS World University Rankings 2026 and 1st in Asia in the QS Asia University Rankings 2026. Recently, HKU has established four new faculties focused on artificial intelligence (AI); science, technology, engineering, the arts, and mathematics (STEAM) education; health; and life sciences. The four faculties are the School of Biomedical Engineering, School of Computing and Data Science, School of Future Media, and School of Innovation. HKU offers various scholarship opportunities for outstanding students. This Hong Kong campus is also included among internationally recognised universities in the Indonesian Ministry of Education’s scholarship schemes, including the Garuda Scholarship.
