Hong Kong releases five-year plan for socio-economic development

The Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (SAR) on Wednesday (16/09) published its first five-year plan for socio-economic development for the 2026-2030 period.

This initial five-year plan for socio-economic development for 2026-2030 will assist in building a more open, inclusive, liberal, prosperous, and secure Hong Kong, stated Hong Kong SAR Chief Executive John Lee on Wednesday, according to Xinhua.

While presenting the blueprint, Lee noted that the 2026-2030 period represents a crucial five years for Hong Kong to seize opportunities to accelerate the transition from stability to prosperity, enhance social welfare, and build a better home for all.

The blueprint will provide an overview of the development direction, optimise resource allocation, stabilise social expectations, and provide better protection for social welfare and the interests of global investors, Lee said.

Highlighting that this year marks the beginning of China’s 15th Five-Year Plan period (2026-2030), Lee stated that this inaugural blueprint is a major initiative by the Hong Kong SAR government to maintain and strengthen the executive-led system and improve governance effectiveness.

Lee added that the blueprint signifies the need for strategic planning for Hong Kong to proactively align itself with national development strategies, as well as to integrate more effectively into and support overall national development.
