Hong Kong Fuel Prices Surpass Rp 70,000 per Litre Due to Middle East Conflict

HONG KONG, KOMPAS.com — The surge in global energy prices due to the conflict in the Middle East is increasingly felt across Asia.

In Hong Kong, fuel prices (BBM) have even been recorded as the most expensive in the world, amid disruptions to global energy supplies caused by the Iran war.

Citing a CNN report on Friday (3/4/2026), petrol prices in the financial hub reached around 15.6 US dollars per gallon.

This increase in fuel prices comes amid the soaring global oil prices in recent weeks.

The conflict involving Iran and Western countries has disrupted global energy distribution routes, particularly in the Strait of Hormuz, a strategic passage through which about 20% of the world’s oil supply travels.

For Hong Kong and many other Asian countries, this situation has a significant impact. The region is highly dependent on energy imports from the Middle East, most of which are shipped through that route.

This condition will ultimately spill over into the prices of goods and services, including the daily needs of the population.

Although the car ownership rate in Hong Kong is relatively low, at only about 8.4% of the total population of 7.5 million people, the rise in fuel prices still exerts significant pressure on the city’s economy.

This is due to the important role of energy in the goods distribution chain, including logistics transportation and delivery services.

Jason Kan, an independent commercial consultant in Hong Kong, said that refuelling costs have increased significantly since the outbreak of the conflict.

“The 15% (price) increase clearly has a major impact,” he stated.

He added that fuel prices in Hong Kong were already high from the start, so the additional rise becomes a heavier burden compared to other countries in the region.
