The moment a train arrives at its destination station is often critical for passengers. Amid the bustle of disembarking, carrying children, or rushing to catch connecting transport, focus on personal belongings frequently wavers. In that small panic, valuable items—from mobile phones and laptops containing work documents to high-value jewellery—are often left behind in station areas or inside train carriages. For passengers in the PT Kereta Api Indonesia (Persero) Operational Area (Daop) 2 Bandung, however, losing an item does not mean it is gone forever. Throughout the first semester of this year, the Lost and Found system proved its effectiveness by rescuing thousands of customers’ forgotten belongings. According to data released by KAI Daop 2 Bandung, officers secured a total of 1,479 passenger items during the first six months of the year. The estimated value of these items reached a significant figure of Rp899,972,000. KAI Daop 2 Bandung Public Relations Manager Kuswardojo detailed that the findings are categorised into several types, including electronics, jewellery, and other valuables. These items were discovered at various points, from passenger seats inside train carriages to waiting areas at stations across the Daop 2 Bandung region. “In addition to valuables, we also secured 926 personal effects such as clothing and helmets, as well as 16 food items,” Kuswardojo stated in Bandung on Thursday (2/7). KAI implements strict standard operating procedures (SOP) in handling found items. Every item is meticulously recorded, stored in a secure location, and undergoes a thorough identity verification process before being returned to its rightful owner. “We make every effort to ensure that every found item can be returned to its owner. However, passenger vigilance remains the primary factor. The sooner a loss is reported to station officers or the 121 contact centre, the greater the chance the item will be found,” he added. Passengers should be aware that holding periods vary depending on the type of item. Kuswardojo emphasised that if the owner does not claim the item within the specified period, KAI will proceed according to applicable regulations, including handing over valuable items to the police for further legal handling. Reporting a loss quickly is the key to successful recovery. If you realise you have left an item behind, immediate practical steps should be taken.
