JAKARTA, KOMPAS.com – Honda’s global electrification strategy is under the spotlight following the cancellation of its electric vehicle (EV) project for the US and Canada markets. Nevertheless, the direction of development in the Asia region, including Indonesia, shows a different signal and continues to progress. President Director of PT Honda Prospect Motor (HPM), Masanao Kataoka, stated that they are still reviewing the global electric vehicle strategy. “We are still considering the global EV strategy, so our headquarters is thinking about how we introduce electrification to the world,” said Kataoka, when met in North Jakarta on Monday (30/3/2026). This decision is quite surprising, given that the company had previously outlined an aggressive EV expansion plan in that region. On the other hand, Honda’s electric vehicle development in the Asia region continues unabated. This is evident from a video of a Honda electric car road test in India circulating on social media. This indication strengthens that Honda’s electrification project in Asia remains on track as planned. The distribution of those electric vehicle models is said to start from Japan and India as the main markets, before being expanded to other countries in the Asia region. With this situation, the Indonesian market has the potential to become part of the subsequent expansion, in line with the increasing adoption of electric vehicles domestically. However, Honda will still monitor market developments before determining concrete steps regarding the launch of EV models in Indonesia.
