Honda's Electric SUV to be Produced in India, Ready for Export to Japan
JAKARTA, KOMPAS.com – Honda is confirmed to continue developing its electric vehicles despite previously cancelling several projects in the United States. One of the models now confirmed for launch is the 0 α SUV, which will be produced in India.
Some time ago, Honda officially halted plans to produce the 0 Saloon, 0 SUV, and Acura RSX EV in Uncle Sam’s country. Nevertheless, the investments already poured in are not entirely wasted.
Instead, Honda is shifting focus to a smaller model, namely the 0 α SUV. This model will be produced in India and not only marketed locally but also prepared for export to various countries.
Additionally, testing also includes charging capabilities to adapt to local consumer needs in the target markets.
The decision to choose India as the production base is considered quite reasonable. This is because Honda can take advantage of more competitive labour costs, while optimising the large investments previously made in electric vehicle development.
Not only for the Indian domestic market, the 0 α SUV will also be exported to Japan as Honda’s home market, as well as several other major markets. However, the company has not yet detailed the export destinations.
From a product development perspective, the 0 α SUV is built using Honda’s latest approach titled “Thin, Light, and Wise”. This concept emphasises the use of thinner and lighter batteries, although the capacity has not been disclosed in detail.
Honda also ensures that the battery and drive unit are mounted as low as possible to lower the centre of gravity, thereby expected to improve driving stability.
The 0 α SUV is planned to be introduced starting in fiscal year 2026–2027. The initial launch is estimated to take place in India and Japan, before being expanded to other markets.
Through this programme, Honda aims to combine global engineering strengths with local consumer needs, while delivering an electric SUV that prioritises reliability, comfort, and ease of use.
