Jakarta (ANTARA) - Honda appears to be facing increasing pressure in the domestic automotive market, with declining sales accompanied by reports of the closure of several Honda dealerships in various regions.

According to data from the Indonesian Automotive Industry Association (Gaikindo), accessed on Friday, Honda recorded wholesale sales of only 15,893 units with a market share of 5.5 percent from January to April 2026, causing it to drop out of the top five best-selling brands and fall to sixth place nationally.

This figure even puts the Japanese manufacturer below BYD, which managed to secure fifth place with sales of 17,098 units, capturing a larger share of the four-wheeled vehicle market in Indonesia, namely 5.9 percent.

Honda’s sales also show a monthly downward trend. In January 2026, Honda recorded 4,016 units, increasing to 5,385 units in February, then decreasing to 4,129 units in March and plummeting to 2,363 units in April.

In contrast, BYD has shown more aggressive performance. From January to April 2025, BYD recorded wholesale sales of 9,214 units. This year, the Chinese brand’s sales soared to 17,098 units in just the first four months.

Amid Honda’s decline, Toyota still leads the market with sales of 86,270 units and a market share of 29.8 percent. Daihatsu is in second place with 48,280 units, followed by Mitsubishi Motors with 24,279 units, and Suzuki with 24,154 units.

The total national wholesale sales from January to April 2026 from all brands were recorded at 289,787 units.
