Honda Confirms Continuation of Electric Vehicle Project in Asia

JAKARTA - Honda’s commitment to developing electric vehicles in the Asia region remains on track, even as the Japanese manufacturer takes a different approach in the North American market. This global strategy adjustment is described as a response to the ever-changing market dynamics.

Previously, Honda announced the cancellation of its electric vehicle production project for the US and Canadian markets. The decision was surprising, given that the company had previously outlined aggressive expansion plans for electric vehicles in that region.

Sales & Marketing and After Sales Director of HPM, Yusak Billy, explained that the strategy change in North America does not mean halting overall electrification ambitions. According to him, the step was taken to adapt to the local market conditions, which have different characteristics.

“Meanwhile, testing of electric models in India is in line with Honda’s focus on delivering the most relevant products, particularly for the Asian market,” said Billy, when contacted by Kompas.com recently.

Distribution of the model will begin from Japan and India as the main markets, before being expanded to other countries in the Asian region. This strategy underscores that Asia is one of the key focuses in Honda’s future electrification roadmap.

“For Indonesia, we will continue to study market developments and communicate with the principal to bring models that suit the needs of consumers here, including strengthening the role of hybrid models as a transitional step towards the electrification era,” said Billy.
