Honda has become the first company in the world to achieve a five-star rating in the products/services category of the FIA Road Safety Index. This assessment covers various Honda safety initiatives across 17 countries, including Indonesia, which collectively represent more than 90 per cent of Honda’s global sales volume for motorcycles and cars.

The award was presented at the Autodromo Nazionale Monza, Italy, coinciding with the Italian Formula 1 Grand Prix on Thursday (10/09/2026).

This achievement follows the results of an evaluation in February 2025, when Honda became the first company in the automotive industry to obtain a three-star rating in the FIA Road Safety Index, which was then the highest possible rating in the assessment system.

The FIA Road Safety Index is a system developed by the Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile (FIA) to assist companies and organisations in measuring and improving their contributions to road safety. In the latest evaluation, the FIA expanded the rating scheme to five stars using a more comprehensive methodology.

The assessment of Honda included the implementation of the Plan, Do, Check, Act (PDCA) system within its safety programmes. The FIA evaluated several factors, including management’s commitment to long-term safety strategies, global accident data monitoring, the achievement of safety targets, the use of safety technology, the development of a safety culture, and transparency regarding traffic safety information.

FIA President Mohammed Ben Sulayem stated that Honda’s achievement demonstrates the importance of corporate efforts in enhancing road safety. “Road safety remains one of the most pressing challenges in the world. I congratulate Honda for being a pioneer and the first organisation to achieve five stars,” said Ben Sulayem in an official Honda statement on Friday (11/09/2026).

FIA Secretary General for Automobile Mobility, Sustainability and Tourism, Willem Groenewald, noted that the expansion of the FIA Road Safety Index to five stars is intended to encourage companies to make road safety a measurable and accountable part of their decision-making processes. According to Groenewald, Honda’s achievement is expected to inspire other organisations to measure their contributions to road safety and implement concrete steps to reduce accident risks.

Mikihito Kojima, Assistant Vice President and General Manager of Traffic Safety Promotion Operations at Honda Motor Co., Ltd., stated that the assessment covers Honda’s safety efforts regarding both products and road users more broadly. “At Honda, our goal is not only to provide safer products but also to ensure the safety of every customer and all surrounding road users,” said Kojima.

As part of its global safety commitment, Honda aims to reduce the number of fatalities from accidents involving Honda motorcycles and cars by 50 per cent per 10,000 units sold by 2030, compared to 2020 levels. This target is directed towards achieving zero fatalities from traffic accidents involving Honda vehicles globally by 2050.

Honda stated it will utilise real-world traffic accident data to evaluate the effectiveness of its developed safety technologies. This approach is part of the company’s efforts to enhance vehicle safety and reduce risks for all road users.
