JAKARTA – Damage to homes following the 2025 floods continues to cause concern for residents of Punan Malinau Village, Segah Subdistrict, Berau, East Kalimantan. Some residents have persisted in living in deteriorating houses until they finally received assistance through a renovation programme to restore their dwellings to be habitable, safe, and healthy.

For Ubang, the major flood that submerged his home for days marked the beginning of the decline in his living conditions. The supporting timber began to rot, the walls weakened, and the floor was no longer sturdy, turning a previously livable home into a source of anxiety.

“Since that flood, my house has been slowly deteriorating,” said Ubang in his statement on Wednesday (29/4/2026).

“The wood is starting to rot, the walls are no longer as strong as before. When it rains, I immediately feel anxious.”

He admitted that the worry haunted him every time it rained.

“Afraid the water will enter again, afraid this house won’t hold up. Sometimes I can’t sleep because I keep thinking about it.”

This situation began to change when the Renovation and Sanitation Programme (PONDASI) from PT Natura Pasific Nusantara, part of PT Triputra Agro Persada Tbk (TAPG), arrived to repair his home. The previously fragile parts were reinforced, the floor was fixed, and the house structure was made more robust to withstand extreme weather.

Since July 2025, the programme has been implemented in stages with a target of repairing more than 300 homes. It is being carried out in the company’s operational areas in Jambi, East Kalimantan, and Central Kalimantan.

Identification of beneficiaries is conducted together with the village government to ensure that aid reaches those in need. This collaborative approach helps ensure that the renovation process meets the community’s requirements.

In various regions, the issue of decent housing remains a challenge that is not always visible. However, the quality of living spaces plays a crucial role in supporting health, safety, and family productivity.

Previously, the substandard condition of his home had made him worried about welcoming his child. He wanted to ensure a safe and comfortable living environment for his family.

“With the previous condition of the house, to be honest, I was still worried,” said Jumriadi.

“Thank you to PT NPN for the home renovation assistance; our previously poor home has greatly helped my family.”

He felt the change after the repairs were done.

“Our house is now much better and safer,” he explained.

The changes felt by residents demonstrate that decent housing is not only related to basic needs but also serves as a pillar of security and daily family sustenance.
