Homebound Travel During Rainy Season: Drivers Must Not Recklessly Cross Flood Waters
Jakarta – People planning to travel home for Lebaran in mid-March 2026 are urged to exercise greater caution, as this period still coincides with the rainy season in several regions of Indonesia.
For car drivers, water accumulation on roads should not be taken lightly. Besides potentially impeding vehicle movement, such conditions can also trigger accident risks if not anticipated properly.
Jusri Pulubuhu, founder of Jakarta Defensive Driving Consulting, reminded drivers not to recklessly cross water-logged areas whilst driving. “Drivers must also be careful when crossing floodwaters. Beneath the water’s surface there could be unseen potholes,” Jusri told Kompas.com on Sunday, 8 March 2026.
“If a vehicle crosses without knowing the road conditions underneath, this can affect the stability of the vehicle,” he said.
Potholes covered by water can cause vehicles to lose balance, particularly if crossed at a certain speed. “Drivers could lose control of their vehicles and risk losing control whilst driving,” Jusri said.
Therefore, drivers are advised to reduce speed when approaching floodwaters, maintain distance from the vehicle ahead, and seek alternative routes if the flooding appears sufficiently deep.
Additionally, drivers should ensure that tyre condition, brakes, lights, and windscreen wipers are all in good condition to ensure safe travel even whilst driving in heavy rain.
