Home Minister Tito Urges DKPP to Enhance Integrity of Election Organisers

Minister of Home Affairs Muhammad Tito Karnavian has encouraged the Election Organisers Honour Council (DKPP) to continuously enhance the integrity of General Election organisers. This effort can be achieved by strengthening preventive measures, in line with the principle of ‘keeping them out of jail’. “Success is not about making many rulings and finding faults, but about ensuring no one goes to prison for violations. Therefore, prevention principles may be necessary,” said the Home Minister while attending the 14th Anniversary Celebration of DKPP at the DKPP Session Room in Jakarta on Friday (12/6). As the institution tasked with safeguarding electoral ethics, the Home Minister hopes DKPP will continue to play an active role in preventing violations. In this context, DKPP can undertake various corrective steps regarding potential issues that could lead to violations in the conduct of elections. On the same occasion, the Home Minister also appreciated the implementation of elections in Indonesia, which have been running well so far. As the world’s third-largest democracy, Indonesia faces high complexity in organising elections. Nevertheless, he stressed that elections are an important symbol in democratic life. “Why? It is the only momentum for all people who have the right to vote. They are involved and participate in making important decisions, the only one. The rest is through representatives,” he added. Furthermore, the Home Minister encouraged DKPP to strengthen the capacity of law enforcement officials in handling electoral issues. According to him, the number of election officials spread across various regions requires adequate education so that violations can be prevented early. Additionally, supporting facilities and infrastructure must be prepared so that DKPP can carry out its duties and functions optimally. “In principle, I support DKPP to improve integrity and think more progressively about how to prevent, while the election process has not yet begun,” he concluded.
