Home Affairs Ministry Asserts E-KTP Does Not Need Photocopying: Already Equipped with Chip

“The utilisation of e-KTP cannot be done unilaterally by us from the related institutions under Dukcapil. However, the utilisation certainly involves user institutions. The e-KTP is already equipped with advanced technology, a chip. That chip contains the data,” said the Director General of Dukcapil at the Ministry of Home Affairs, Teguh Setyabudi, to reporters in Depok on Wednesday (6/5/2026). “Actually, the e-KTP no longer needs to be photocopied because that is actually a violation of personal data protection (PDP), really. But actually, to read the e-KTP, there is a tool, a card reader to read it so it no longer needs to be photocopied,” he added. Teguh stated that Dukcapil has advised all user institutions not to implement photocopying of electronic ID cards. “We have advised all user institutions not to photocopy. But this may come with many responses regarding why e-KTPs are photocopied. It will raise awareness among all parties and will also encourage us to then request and invite user institutions,” he said. He called for each institution to synergise for data interoperability integration. Therefore, continued Teguh, service data will no longer be handled manually but system to system. “Then for other institutions, let’s synergise together, collaborate for data integration, for data interoperability. Let’s do it together so that it becomes system to system, not manual anymore. For those who haven’t collaborated yet, let’s join us in data matching,” he explained. “And now, alhamdulillah, the government’s attention is so great; now there is the Committee for Accelerating Government Digital Transformation, there is DEN, there is Komdigi, Kemenmarves, there is Bappenas, BSSN. There is us from the Ministry of Home Affairs, and various related ministries and institutions together,” added Teguh. He hopes that with collaboration between government and institutions, the utilisation of electronic ID cards can be optimised. “Hopefully, with increasing synergy among those institutions, it will truly optimise the utilisation of e-KTP and also related to the utilisation of population data used for all purposes,” said Teguh.
