Home Affairs Minister Urges Java-Bali Regional Leaders to Maintain Political Stability
The Minister of Home Affairs, Tito Karnavian, has issued a stern warning to all regional heads that political and security stability is an absolute prerequisite for development programmes and poverty alleviation efforts to function effectively.
Tito emphasised this during an event for the 2026 Regional Java-Bali Outstanding Local Government Awards held at the Marriott Hotel, Sleman, DIY, on Thursday night. According to him, without a conducive political situation, various economic and physical development programmes will struggle to achieve optimal results.
“Without a conducive political situation, both physical and economic development programmes will not run to their full potential,” Tito stated before the regional heads.
The Minister explained that political stability serves as the primary foundation. He also expressed appreciation to regional leaders who have managed to maintain good governance amidst contemporary challenges.
“Despite some regions potentially facing legal issues, the fact remains that many regional heads are attentive, high-achieving, and capable of effectively addressing poverty and unemployment,” he added.
The government has announced plans for the next wave of assessments covering approximately 6,000 regions across different categories. This process will be closely monitored until the end of November to ensure objectivity and to uphold the dignity of local governments.
Tito asserted that he is personally supervising the assessment process for the 2026 Outstanding Local Government Awards. This is being done to guarantee that the results truly represent the best performance on the ground.
“I am supervising this, and I declare that this is the heart of the Ministry. Otherwise, we will lose our dignity,” the Minister insisted. He guaranteed that the assessment is accountable as it utilises quantitative indicators that are open to the public.
In addition to issues regarding poverty and stunting, the government’s supervisory focus is also directed towards inflation control. Tito revealed that the current national inflation condition remains within a safe category.
“We monitor national inflation weekly, and thankfully it is at 3.0%, below the maximum target of 3.5%. This is a good target. It means there is economic growth, yet inflation remains well-controlled,” he concluded.
Through this competitive assessment system, the Ministry of Home Affairs hopes that high-achieving regions can maintain their performance, while those currently below target are motivated to implement improvements for the welfare of the people in their respective areas.
