Home Affairs Minister Tito Appreciates DPR's Support for Strengthening Border Areas

The Minister of Home Affairs, Muhammad Tito Karnavian, acting as the Head of the National Border Management Agency (BNPP), has expressed his appreciation for the support provided by the DPR RI Commission II in efforts to strengthen the management of border regions.

This was stated following his attendance at a Working Meeting and Hearing with the DPR RI, which focused on discussing the results of the Border Area Management Working Committee’s visit. He noted that such support is vital given the complexity of the issues faced in border areas.

“I would like to convey my high appreciation to Commission II. Why? Because they have formed a special team, a Working Committee (Panja),” said Tito at the Parliament Complex, Senayan, Jakarta, on Monday, 29 June 2026.

He explained that the Commission II Working Committee has inspected several points within Indonesia’s border regions. From these inspections, the team identified various challenges that still require the active involvement of all stakeholders.

During the session, the Minister of Home Affairs also emphasised the importance of the BNPP as the agency responsible for coordinating the resolution of various issues in border areas. This role includes resolving national border disputes and accelerating development in border regions. According to him, equitable development will increase community welfare and strengthen nationalism.

“If the border regions are prosperous and the people are well-off, nationalism will be high, making it difficult for other countries to infiltrate,” said Tito.

As the world’s largest archipelagic nation, Indonesia possesses highly complex borders, both on land and at sea. For land borders, Indonesia directly borders Malaysia, Timor-Leste, and Papua New Guinea. At sea, Indonesia shares borders with ten different countries.

Given the magnitude of this responsibility, the Minister noted that Commission II of the DPR RI has proposed that the BNPP be granted more imperative authority. He remarked that the coordination function currently held by the BNPP often faces challenges because individual ministries and agencies have their own specific focuses and jurisdictions.

“Because acting as a coordinating body is not easy; we must coordinate with entities that are at the same level as Ministries/Agencies, as well as local governments,” Tito added.

Furthermore, in line with the directives of President Prabowo Subianto, the Minister of Home Affairs emphasised that collaboration between ministries, agencies, and all relevant parties is the key to accelerating development in border regions.
