Home Affairs Minister Tito Appreciates DPR's Support for Strengthening Border Areas

Minister of Home Affairs Muhammad Tito Karnavian, in his capacity as Head of the National Border Management Agency (BNPP), has expressed appreciation for the support from Commission II of the House of Representatives (DPR) in efforts to strengthen the management of border areas. He conveyed this after attending a working meeting and hearing at the DPR, which discussed the findings of a working committee on state border management. “I extend my highest appreciation to Commission II. Why? Because they formed a special team called a working committee (Panja),” Tito said at the Parliament Complex in Senayan, Jakarta, on Monday, 29 June 2026. He explained that the Commission II working committee had reviewed several points along Indonesia’s border areas. From this review, the team identified various challenges that still require the active role of all stakeholders. On the occasion, the minister also stressed the importance of the BNPP’s existence as a body that coordinates the resolution of various issues in border areas. This role includes resolving state boundary disputes and accelerating the development of border regions. He noted that equitable development would improve community welfare while strengthening nationalism. “If the state’s border areas are prosperous, the people are well-off, and nationalism is high, it will be difficult for other countries to infiltrate,” Tito said. As the world’s largest archipelagic nation, Indonesia has highly complex border areas, both on land and at sea. On land, Indonesia shares direct borders with Malaysia, Timor-Leste, and Papua New Guinea. At sea, it borders ten countries. Given the magnitude of this role, Commission II proposed that the BNPP be granted more imperative authority. The minister acknowledged that the coordinating function currently held by the BNPP often faces challenges because each ministry and agency has its own focus and authority. “Because a coordinating body is not easy; we have to coordinate with ministries and agencies of equal standing, as well as local governments,” Tito stated. In line with the direction of President Prabowo Subianto, the minister affirmed that collaboration between ministries, agencies, and all related parties is the key to accelerating development in border areas.
