Home Affairs Minister States BSPS Program Embodies Government Presence for the People
Minister of Home Affairs (Mendagri) Muhammad Tito Karnavian assured the government will continue to be present for the people, aiming for citizens to directly experience the state’s benefits and role in daily life. He made the statement while inspecting the Self-Help Housing Stimulus Assistance (BSPS) site in Kendari City, Southeast Sulawesi, on Friday, 29 May 2026. ‘This is where we want to change our mindset so that those genuinely relying on government assistance can find that support,’ Tito said in a written statement on Saturday, 30 May 2026. During the visit, Tito explained that his trip with the Minister of Housing and Settlement Maruarar Sirait was part of the government’s effort to ensure President Prabowo Subianto’s housing priority programme runs optimally and targets the right beneficiaries. He noted that housing assistance allocations in Southeast Sulawesi have significantly increased in 2026 compared to the previous year. While 1,129 housing units were targeted in 2025, the figure rose to 8,973 in 2026, with each unit receiving a Rp20 million quality improvement grant. ‘In Kendari City specifically, the government aims to rehabilitate 548 housing units for households earning approximately Rp1 million per month,’ he added. Tito stated that the house renovation and housing construction programme represents one of the largest-scale initiatives he has encountered during his tenure as Home Affairs Minister. ‘During my time as Minister, this is the first time there has been such a substantial programme to help people with substandard housing, including building new homes,’ he emphasised. He further commended President Prabowo Subianto’s guidance and the Housing Minister’s hands-on approach in visiting low-income settlements. Tito expressed hope that the housing assistance programme would continue and expand in the coming years to reduce Indonesia’s housing backlog. ‘Let us hope that next year and beyond, this programme continues and grows so that issues such as those without homes or living in unsuitable conditions decrease over time,’ he concluded.
