Home Affairs Minister Muhammad Tito Karnavian has encouraged improving the quality of life for citizens by strengthening the Self-Help Housing Stimulant Assistance (BSPS) programme, commonly known as the ‘bedah rumah’ (house renovation) scheme. The programme is one of the government’s efforts to help low-income earners obtain decent housing.

Tito stressed that the government’s attention to ordinary people is evident in the expanded scope of the house renovation programme initiated by President Prabowo Subianto. “Our President, Mr Prabowo Subianto, cares deeply about ordinary people. This is a small example of his concern, which may not be widely noticed — the house renovation programme,” Tito said in a written statement on Wednesday (24/6/2026).

He made the remarks while inspecting the implementation of the BSPS programme in Pone Village, Limboto Barat District, Gorontalo Regency, on Tuesday (23/6/2026). Tito further explained that providing decent housing is linked to efforts to reduce poverty. According to data presented during the visit, the number of uninhabitable houses in Gorontalo remains quite high and correlates with the region’s poverty level.

Tito assessed that many poor families face limited access to decent housing. Therefore, resolving housing issues will have a direct impact on improving people’s welfare. “If we solve the housing problem, we can solve the poverty problem,” he said.

In addition to house construction, the government is also strengthening legal certainty of home ownership through a land certification programme. This step is carried out through cross-ministerial and institutional synergy to provide certainty of land rights for beneficiary communities.

On that occasion, Tito also spoke with one of the recipients of the house renovation assistance. The beneficiary expressed gratitude and thanked President Prabowo for the aid received. Tito said he was pleased to see the change in the condition of the beneficiary’s house, which has now become more liveable. He also appreciated the swift work of various parties, especially the Ministry of Housing and Settlement Areas and other relevant ministries and agencies involved in implementing the programme.
