Home Affairs Minister Reveals 97% of Temporary Shelters for Sumatra Disaster Victims Completed

Minister of Home Affairs Tito Karnavian has announced that the construction of temporary shelters (huntara) for disaster victims in Aceh, North Sumatra, and West Sumatra has reached 97 percent. The government is now shifting its focus to accelerating the development of permanent infrastructure in the affected regions.

Tito stated that following the latest checks and meetings with regional heads, almost no residents remain in emergency tents. “Huntara is 97 percent built. Based on the final checks and meetings with regional heads, there are almost no more residents living in evacuation tents,” Tito said after a meeting in Jakarta on Thursday (18/6/2026).

He noted that the evacuation situation in West Sumatra has long been resolved, while in North Sumatra, a brief re-emergence of tents due to subsequent flooding has already been handled. The government’s current priority is the construction and repair of permanent infrastructure, including provincial and district roads and bridges that were severely damaged or affected by further rain and flooding.

“Our main priority going forward is infrastructure, making the regional roads and bridges that have not been touched permanent. That must be completed immediately,” Tito emphasised. Basic services have also been largely restored, with hospitals and community health centres in the three provinces back in operation and thousands of affected schools undergoing recovery.

The government is accelerating the post-disaster rehabilitation and reconstruction programme with a budget allocation of Rp 100.1 trillion through to 2028. The funds will be used to expedite recovery across infrastructure, education, health, housing, and the local economy in Aceh, North Sumatra, and West Sumatra.
