Minister of Home Affairs Tito Karnavian has spoken about the planned revision of Law Number 7 of 2017 concerning General Elections. He stated that as yet, no decision has been made on whether the revision will be an initiative of the government or the House of Representatives (DPR RI). “If it is a government initiative, we must be ready with the concept and draft. If the initiative comes from the DPR, then we are ready with the DIM (Daftar Isian Masalah/problem inventory list) later,” Tito said at the Parliament Complex in Central Jakarta on Thursday, 11 June 2026. The former National Police Chief explained that the Ministry of Home Affairs has prepared for all possibilities related to the election law revision. “Whatever the scenario, we are preparing ourselves. As for the Ministry of Home Affairs, it will certainly be the lead, won’t it, from the government. Yes, we are preparing. When the timing arrives, whether the government or the DPR discusses it, we are ready,” Tito said. Previously, Deputy Speaker of the DPR RI Sufmi Dasco Ahmad mentioned that Commission II of the House would soon begin discussions on the election law revision. “In the near future, the leadership of Commission II will hold a public participation event which will certainly garner more input to enrich the matters that need to be revised,” Dasco said at the Parliament Complex on Wednesday, 3 June 2026. He stated that all political party factions in the DPR have expressed readiness to discuss proposals and changes to the academic paper and articles within the Election Law. Dasco noted that his side has also reminded Commission II of the DPR to conduct the deliberations carefully. “I have repeatedly stated that we will also be more careful so that this time it does not end up being challenged and granted by the Constitutional Court (MK),” he explained. The Gerindra Party politician added that the DPR will first make the election law revision a DPR initiative proposal before commencing discussions.
