Jayapura (ANTARA) - Home Affairs Minister Muhammad Tito Karnavian stated that President Prabowo Subianto is deeply concerned about the most basic needs of the people, such as housing.

“The President cares deeply about ordinary people, including housing matters, because it is a fundamental necessity for the community,” he said in Jayapura, Papua, on Monday.

According to Tito, there are around 30 million uninhabitable houses spread across all regions in Indonesia, making it a focus for the government to continue efforts to reduce and eventually resolve this issue.

“It is hoped that the Self-Help Housing Stimulant Assistance (BSPS) programme, or house renovation programme, from the Ministry of Housing and Residential Areas will accelerate equitable development,” he stated.

He explained that, in addition, the more private parties that build housing with government facilities, the more it will help solve the housing problem. Specifically in Papua, around 30 percent of the population live in uninhabitable houses.

“Therefore, we appreciate the Ministry of Housing and Residential Areas (KemenPKP) for assisting the community through the house renovation programme and encouraging the private sector to build housing for the people,” he said again.

He added that there are still around 71,500 uninhabitable houses in Papua, with the percentage of such houses in Papua Province reaching 32.5 percent, while in Papua Pegunungan Province the figure is close to 80 percent.

He expressed hope that the BSPS programme would not only improve the quality of life for the community but also assist local governments in reducing poverty rates.
