Home Affairs Minister Praises Housing Renovation Programme in Papua Region
Home Affairs Minister (Mendagri) Muhammad Tito Karnavian has expressed appreciation for the unfit housing renovation programme (RTLH) in the Papua region, initiated by the Ministry of Housing and Settlement Areas (PKP). He noted that housing problems in Papua remain significant, as many residents still lack decent homes.
Tito made these remarks following the Preparatory Meeting for the Construction and Rehabilitation of Decent Homes in Six Provinces in the Papua Region at the Ministry of Home Affairs (Kemendagri) headquarters in Jakarta today.
“This is an extraordinary programme by the PKP Minister, including subsidised housing, home renovations, and others. For the home renovation programme, at least 21,000 (homes in the Papua region) have been allocated,” Tito said in a written statement on Wednesday (15/4/2026).
He acknowledged that no housing programme has been as extensive as the current one by the Ministry of PKP. Moreover, the Ministry of PKP has special programmes for border areas, including in the Papua region.
Tito stated that the scale of the programme would be difficult to achieve relying solely on Regional Revenue and Expenditure Budgets (APBD). This is considering that the Papua region has six provinces and 42 regencies/cities.
“If we do it simply, 21,000 divided by 42 regencies/cities is about 500. How much cost would each regency/city’s APBD have to allocate?” he said.
“We convey our highest appreciation to the Housing Minister, Mr Maruarar Sirait, for the housing programmes including home renovations, among others, with a significant number in Papua, Tanah Papua,” he added.
Meanwhile, PKP Minister Maruarar Sirait explained that besides home renovations, his ministry is also preparing several housing programmes for Papua residents, such as People’s Business Credit (KUR) for Housing and subsidised homes.
“There are also three slum areas being improved: in the main Papua, in Jayapura, then in South Papua and also in Sorong. So the programme is massive,” Maruarar concluded.
Attendees at the forum included Deputy Home Affairs Minister (Wamendagri) Ribka Haluk, Head of the Central Statistics Agency (BPS) Amalia Adininggar Widyasanti, executives from the Committee for the Acceleration of Special Autonomy Development in Papua, as well as governors and representatives from the Papua region.
