Home Affairs Minister Inspects Housing Aid Programme in Jayapura

Home Affairs Minister Muhammad Tito Karnavian conducted a direct inspection of the Self-Help Housing Stimulant Assistance (BSPS) programme in Mosso Village, Muara Tami District, Jayapura City, Papua. The visit served as a symbolic launch for the renovation of 22,379 homes across Tanah Papua, with 4,500 of those located in Papua Province. Karnavian stated the inspection aimed to ensure the people’s housing programme, initiated by President Prabowo Subianto, is running smoothly, particularly in eastern Indonesia. He explained the programme reflects the President’s concern for the community, especially low-income groups, and called on regional heads to fully support its implementation so that the benefits can be widely felt. During his review of two houses, the minister assessed that the buildings were indeed eligible for the BSPS assistance, noting severe damage including decaying walls, weak foundations, and leaking roofs. Karnavian pointed out that the high percentage of uninhabitable homes in Tanah Papua is a key reason for broad support of the programme, adding that around 30 per cent of the population lives in unfit housing. He remarked that local budgets alone cannot resolve the issue as they are already focused on education, health, roads, and personnel expenditure. The involvement of the central government through the Ministry of Housing and Settlement Areas was described as a strategic leap to accelerate the handling of substandard housing in the region, a move he claimed was unprecedented. The event was attended by Papua Governor Mathius D. Fakhiri, Jayapura Mayor Abisai Rollo, and other relevant officials.
