Home Affairs Minister Emphasises that Implementation of People's Housing Programme Will Drive Regional Progress
Home Affairs Minister Muhammad Tito Karnavian has emphasised that the implementation of the people’s housing programme will drive regional progress. According to him, the programme is capable of delivering economic impacts that can increase original regional income (PAD). The statement was made by Tito during a dialogue with developers at the Collaboration for Housing Financing and Community Empowerment event held at the Ahmad Yani Raider 600 Building, Manggar Baru Ward, Balikpapan City, East Kalimantan, on Tuesday (5/5/2026). He explained that the central government has significant attention towards the community, particularly low-income households (MBR), including in the provision of people’s housing. “From the perspective of local governments’ duties in addressing poverty, the more housing that is built, whether by local governments or developers, the lower the poverty rate will be,” Tito stated in a press release received by Kompas.com on Wednesday (6/5/2026). He added that the people’s housing programme can also optimise the economic ecosystem in the property sector. For instance, increased developer activities in utilising construction raw materials. Furthermore, housing construction is seen as capable of enhancing the economic value of regions, particularly in land utilisation. “Thus, regions can increase PAD from buildings, property taxes (PBB), and others. This is certainly beneficial for the regions,” Tito asserted. For information, the event was also attended by the Minister of Housing and Settlement Areas (PKP) Maruarar Sirait, East Kalimantan Governor Rudy Mas’ud, Balikpapan Mayor Rahmad Mas’ud, and other relevant parties.
