Home Affairs Minister Appreciates Indonesia–UK Partnership Across Multiple Sectors

Home Affairs Minister (Mendagri) Muhammad Tito Karnavian has expressed appreciation for the close partnership that has long been established between Indonesia and the United Kingdom. “A strong relationship has existed between us, both Indonesia and the UK, in many areas, ranging from trade, the economy, military relations, to education, culture, the environment, climate change, and so on,” Tito said in a statement in Jakarta on Thursday.

He made these remarks while representing the Indonesian Government at the celebration of King Charles III’s 78th birthday in Jakarta on Wednesday evening (10/6). The Home Affairs Minister assessed that the relationship between the two countries is not only established at the intergovernmental level but is also reflected in the personal closeness of their leaders.

On the same occasion, the minister also touched on the historical ties between Indonesia and the UK that were built long before Indonesia’s independence. This is evidenced, among other things, by historical relics such as Fort Marlborough in Bengkulu. Furthermore, the Rafflesia Arnoldii flower became known to the world through an expedition involving British physician Joseph Arnold alongside Sir Thomas Stamford Raffles.

Tito also mentioned the discovery of the Wallace Line, an imaginary boundary separating Asian-origin flora and fauna in western Indonesia from Australasian-origin flora and fauna in the east. This line was introduced by British naturalist Alfred Russel Wallace. “So, that is the legacy of Sir Alfred Wallace which remains valid and serves as a reference for every government, the international community, and researchers,” he stated.

He further noted that relations between Indonesia and the UK are also strong in the fields of sports and culture. On a personal level, the Home Affairs Minister admitted to having an emotional closeness with the UK, as he once pursued studies at the University of Exeter in England through a scholarship from the British Council.

“So, this memorable and prestigious celebration of His Majesty King Charles III’s birthday will firstly strengthen the future relationship between the two countries in many respects. Secondly, of course, we pray for His Majesty, wish him a long life, and may God protect King Charles III,” concluded the minister.
